Frequently asked questions
Does Trinity just care for people with cancer?
No – people with all sorts of illnesses use Trinity’s care. This includes people with heart, lung, liver or kidney conditions or illnesses such as motor neurone disease.
How long can I stay as an inpatient?
People can stay at Trinity for as long as it takes to resolve their symptoms. Many people find that a relatively short period of inpatient care makes a real difference to how they are feeling and enables them to return home feeling more comfortable.
However, we are not a permanent alternative to care in your own home, or a care home or nursing home. Trinity only has 28 beds and there is a high demand for them. If your symptoms have been resolved but it would be difficult for you to go back to you own home, then we will help you, your family, friends and carers to look at and find other places where your care can be continued.
Will Trinity still provide support when I go home?
If you need continuing support when you return home, this can be provided by our community and outpatient team. The team is on call 24 hours a day to give telephone help, advice and support. If you would like to find out more about our home care and outpatient services, please talk to one of our inpatient nurses or ask for a copy of our Guide to Home Care and Outpatient Services.
Does everyone who comes to Trinity as an inpatient die here?
No – over 40% of our inpatients will go home.
But aren’t hospices just for people who have a few weeks to live?
No. Trinity provides care to people whose illnesses are no longer curable and who have symptoms that need our specialist support. Whilst some people using our services may only have a few weeks to live, many may have 12 months or more.
Can I go out whilst I am an inpatient?
Yes. You can maintain whatever level of independence suits you and carry on doing the things you enjoy. If you need support to go out, a member of the nursing team, a healthcare assistant or a volunteer can go with you. And of course, you can go out with family and friends.
What happens if I need to go to hospital whilst an inpatient at Trinity?
If you need to go to a hospital appointment, we can arrange transport and someone to go with you if that is what you would like. If you need to be admitted to hospital for a day or two, your room at Trinity will be here for you to return to.
