New in-patient centre

Model of new In-Patient Centre

A New In-Patient Centre for Trinity Hospice

A history of innovation in care
Trinity has seen many changes since it first opened its doors to patients 115 years ago.

Indeed, Trinity’s history is nothing less than the history of palliative care in the UK.

We remain at the forefront of responding to the needs of patients, carers, volunteers and health care professionals in the light of developments in medicine, care standards, technology, demographics and what the community at large expects from its hospices.

Latest developments: the need for capital improvements at Trinity
No major improvements have been made to our buildings and facilities for many years. And although though some of our buildings are impressive and historically significant, they are also over 200 years old, and struggle to meet the demands of modern palliative care.

We know that the majority of our patients would prefer to stay in single rooms, not multiple occupancy wards. They would like to have en suite toilets and bathing facilities. They would like families and friends to be able to stay in their room overnight. Patients – and those close to them – want to have more privacy but also want to have areas where they can socialise and not feel isolated. Everyone wants to be able to enjoy Trinity’s beautiful gardens.

Trinity prides itself on providing the very highest quality in care and support for both patients and their families. In order to continue to meet our own high standards, the expectations of our patients, and increasing regulatory measures, we have chosen to embark upon this ambitious project.

Model of new In-Patient Centre

A £10 million, state-of-the-art in-patient centre at Clapham Common North Side
In August 2006, following careful planning, options appraisal and consultation, Trinity’s Trustees decided to respond to the above needs by starting work on a new, £10 million in-patient centre.

The new 28 bed inpatient unit will become the finest specialist palliative care facility in the UK.

The ward will consist of two stories of mainly single rooms, although we will have some multiple occupancy bedrooms for those people who like to share. Every bedroom will have access to our gardens either from a patio or a balcony that will be big enough to put a bed on. Every bedroom will have en suite toilet and shower room with facilities for family or friends to stay the night.

The new ward will also house flexible-use treatment and interview rooms and bereavement counselling rooms.

The facilities in the new building will ensure that our services continue to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations of those most important to us, our patients, their families, carers, and friends.

Work on the new building is expected to take 18 months, with the new centre complete by summer 2008.

Funding the new build
We are aiming to raise a minimum of £6 million towards the total £10 million goal – and more if possible. If necessary, we will use a combination of reserves and sale of assets to make this much needed project a reality, but we want and need to raise as much money as possible.

A good start!
The good news is that our fundraising campaign, chaired by Michael Hintze, has already raised over £4 million in cash, cash pledges and other financial commitments, including:

£500,000 from the Michael & Dorothy Hintze Family Charitable Foundation
£450,000 from one of the Sainsbury Family Trusts
£300,000 from Guy’s & St Thomas’s Charity
£250,000 from the Henry Smith Charity
£250,000 from Richard Lockwood
£200,000 in collective giving from Trinity’s Trustees
£150,000 from ICAP
£100,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation
£100,000 from the PF Fleming Charitable Trust
£  90,000 from the Tate Family and associated businesses
£  75,000 from the Foyle Foundation

A minimum of £2 million still needed: we need your support!
We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of the above, pacesetting donors and benefactors, but we still need your help to raise a further £2 million – if not more.

Can you make a special contribution to this special project?
There are many ways to support this special project. Can you:

Make a one-off, tax effective gift of capital or 5-year “pledge”?

  • Commit to a special, monthly donation?
  • Make a gift of shares (which can be highly beneficial to the donor as well)?
  • Introduce us to a prospective individual, grant-making trust, community-based organisation or business donor?
  • Organise a special or additional fundraising event?
  • Support a fundraising event by donating a special raffle or auction prize?
  • Join our growing network of supporters and fundraising champions?

Project information & briefing events
We are launching a series of project information and briefing events – both at the Hospice and in community venues. If you would like to know more about this much needed community project and how you can best support it, please call our Director of Fundraising, Alba Lewis, on 020 7787 1069 – or email Alba at ALewis@trinityhospice.org.uk

Thank you
Thank you for your interest and support.

We could not deliver a capital project of the size and significance of our new in-patient centre without the support of our friends, donors, volunteers and grassroots supporters.
